The Cost of Water

The San Joaquin Valley Westlands Water District--the largest irrigation district in the United States--voted no on Governor Brown's Delta Tunnels project to increase the amount of Sacramento River water flowing to the Central Valley and Southern California. Fearing high taxes levied on irrigators to finance the tunnels, this vote could spell the end of Brown's legacy project, that has pitted the Winnemem Wintu tribe at Shasta Lake against the Governor's plan which they believe would cause extinction of their Chinook salmon.

With No Context

Collisions, directed by artist and filmmaker Lynette Wallworth, is a poetic virtual reality (VR) journey to the homeland of indigenous elder Nyarri Morgan and the Martu tribe in the remote Western Australian Pilbara desert. The Martu lived largely untouched by Western culture until the 1960s. Nyarri's first contact with Western culture came in the 1950s via a dramatic collision between his traditional world view and the cutting edge of Western science and technology when he witnessed firsthand, and with no context, an atomic test.

Collisions plays at the Exploratorium Sep 21 to Oct 22. Ticket info here.
