Secular Satanic Panic

As Bruce Wilson reports, 14th Century beliefs about demon possession are resurging in the US, especially among young people. While commonly associated with the Evangelical subculture, this "satanic panic" has moved into the secular mainstream.

In addition to public opinion polls cited by Wilson, religion monitors like Military Religious Freedom Foundation have documented that literature associating Jews with the devil is now being distributed by chaplains on U.S. military bases and naval ships.

While right-wing Christianity is primarily responsible for the increasing belief in demons, sensationalist mainstream media contributes to this mental health problem, that in turn feeds such phenomena as homophobia. Combined with U.S. Treasury funding to churches, religious schools and non-profits, this ideological virus -- made lethal by the Pentecostal New Apostolic Reformation -- is now infecting society at large.

VIP Tyranny

In this article on the Urban Shield trade show, October 25-28 in downtown Oakland, Defending Dissent Foundation examines the Homeland Security honeypot driving the militarizing of America. Like elsewhere in the United States, the Bay Area Homeland Security Strategy is oriented toward enforcing inequality and combating the peace movement. For VIPs of tyranny, the trade show is a chance to show off lethal hardware and intrusive software, while relaxing with fear pimps from the law enforcement consortium feeding at the Homeland Security trough.

Wine and cheese and videos of SWAT teams subduing protestors--what could be better?

Update: Real News interviews Kimber Heinz of War Resisters League about Urban Shield.

Sacred Ground

The four-part Standing on Sacred Ground film series is one of those epic achievements that only come along once in a lifetime. As filmmaker Toby McLeod remarked on the shoots that took the film crew from Russia to Papua, Canada, California, Australia, Hawaii, Ethiopia and Peru, "The toughest shoot by far was the tar sands. Plumes of toxic carbon clouds going up, oily waste ponds seeping poisons down into the Athabasca River, moose and eagle and bear grieving for their shrinking, shattered boreal forest. I'd never been to a petro-state before, and the deformed fish and heart-breaking cancer cases in the native community of Fort Chipewyan took a toll on every member of our crew."
